Suspended police Sgt. Derwin Longmire had more undocumented contact with former Your Black Muslim Bakery leader Yusuf Bey IV and his family after the killing of journalist Chauncey Bailey than previously has been made public. None of the contacts, including telephone calls, are mentioned in Longmire’s case notes. The calls also show that Bey IV seemed to think of Longmire as the bakery’s protector.

Yusuf Bey IV tried several times last year to persuade one of his former followers from Your Black Muslim Bakery not to testify against him in a kidnapping and torture case, recorded telephone calls reveal. Sometimes cajoling, sometimes making veiled threats, Bey IV repeatedly asked Kahlil Raheem not to cooperate with prosecutors even if it meant that Raheem would be locked up.

A judge on Friday shot down Yusuf Bey IV’s attempt to dismiss kidnapping and torture charges against him, quickly ruling that there remains “incredibly damaging” evidence.

The Your Black Muslim Bakery CEO pondered killing his brother-in-law because he was giving information to journalist Chauncey Bailey about the bakery, according to a transcript of grand jury testimony. But Yusuf Bey IV backed off ordering Ali Saleem Bey killed because he didn’t want to anger his older sister, Saleem Bey’s wife, according to the testimony in April by Devaughndre Broussard, the confessed killer of Bailey.
