A federal judge has dismissed Oakland police Sgt. Derwin Longmire’s discrimination suit against the city, ruling that there is no evidence that the department’s aborted attempt to fire him for his handling of the Chauncey Bailey murder investigation was improper.

Derwin Longmire’s investigation of journalist Chauncey Bailey’s 2007 murder was so inadequate that a high-ranking commander said Longmire never should have been a homicide detective in the first place, according to a 2009 state Department of Justice report that was just released.
