A Superior Court judge denied Yusuf Bey IV’s request Tuesday to represent himself against real estate fraud charges, saying Bey IV could not be trusted with special privileges after allegations he tried to have witnesses in an unrelated triple-murder case killed.

Yusuf Bey IV’s longtime lawyer, Lorna Patton Brown, smuggled a hit list out of jail in March that named witnesses her client wanted killed to prevent their testimony in his upcoming trial on charges of ordering journalist Chauncey Bailey and two others killed in 2007, according to court papers filed Tuesday.
