Robert J. Rosenthal

Robert J. Rosenthal is an award-winning journalist with nearly 40 years of experience as reporter, editor and newsroom leader at some of the most respected newspapers in the country. His career has spanned The New York Times, Boston Globe, Philadelphia Inquirer and San Francisco Chronicle. Since December 2007, “Rosey,” as he’s known to colleagues, has been the executive director of the Center for Investigative Reporting.

Rosenthal led a group of reporters from several San Francisco Bay Area media organizations in investigating the August 2007 assassination of Chauncey Bailey, editor of the Oakland Post. At CIR, he has continued to lead the Chauncey Bailey Project.

Among the awards the Chronicle won during Rosenthal’s 5-year tenure as managing editor, the paper received the Pulitzer Prize for feature photography, the George Polk Award for its BALCO coverage of steroid use in baseball, and the White House Correspondents Association’s Poe Award for national reporting.

Before joining the Chronicle, Rosenthal worked at The Philadelphia Inquirer for 22 years as a local reporter, foreign correspondent, city editor, foreign editor, associate managing editor, executive editor and finally as editor and executive vice president.¬†He was the paper’s Africa correspondent, based in Nairobi, Kenya, and he also reported from Beirut and covered the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982.¬†Rosenthal won numerous awards for his work, including the Overseas Press Club Award for magazine writing, the Sigma Delta Chi Award for distinguished foreign correspondence and the National Association of Black Journalists Award for Third World Reporting. In addition, he was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in international reporting.

    It is almost the one year anniversary of the murder of Michael Wills on July 7th(?) who was shot with the same weapon that killed Chauncey Bailey just prior to Bailey’s assassination. Has anything more come to light about Mike’s murder and where do you report on it in your archives? I could not find it in the list of browse categories.
