Michael J. Wills Jr.

Michael J. Wills Jr., 36, was shot to death in the pre-dawn hours of July 12, 2007, on the sidewalk in front of a North Oakland elementary school playing field, not far from Your Black Muslim Bakery. Police suspect his slaying is connected to that of Odell Roberson Jr., who was shot in North Oakland with a similar assault rifle, four days earlier. The same gun was used to shoot up the car of a romantic rival of Yusuf Bey IV, the bakery CEO.

Wills was a musician and as well as a sous chef at Di Bartolo’s, an Italian restaurant on Grand Avenue in Oakland. He was found at 3:05 a.m. on the sidewalk in front of the old Golden Gate Elementary School playground on the 6200 San Pablo Ave. His girlfriend, who lived with him, had told others she believed he was making impromptu trip to a nearby store, perhaps to buy cigarettes or a snack.

Following an Aug. 3, 2007 raid on the bakery, Oakland police said that the slayings of Wills and Roberson are among recent cases in which bakery associates are believed to be involved.
