Chauncey Bailey Project

Jane Doe 4

Jane Doe 4 alleged that Yusuf Ali Bey, the founder of Your Black Muslim Bakery, sexually assaulted her as a minor in 1995.

Hers was the fourth of three other Jane Doe cases that formed the basis of 27 counts of rape and sexual abuse filed in 2002 against Bey, a powerful and influential figure in Oakland.

In 2003, when the U.S. Supreme Court shortened the statute of limitations for sexual abuse cases in California, the charges involving Doe 1, 2 and 3 were dropped,  and those involving Doe 4 were expanded.

But the case never went to trial; Bey died of cancer in September 2003. Jane Doe 1, 2, and 3 filed a civil suit against two of Bey’s wives, social workers and the County of Alameda for allowing the girls to stay with Bey’s family despite their becoming pregnant as early as 13. The suit was settled in 2005.

Doe 4 has not spoken publicly about her experiences and could not be located. Friends said she moved abroad because she feared for her life.
