Chauncey Bailey Project

Cecily Burt

Cecily Burt has been on the staff of the Oakland Tribune since 1992. She has covered in-depth and breaking news on a wide variety of beats, including municipal courts, police, regional health, science and the environment. She has covered city halls in Oakland and Berkeley, and was a writer on the award-winning “Not Just a Number” multimedia project at the Tribune. Currently, she is working to launch an innovative West Oakland Media Center to promote grassroots, community-involved journalism.

Burt worked with Chauncey Bailey for more than a decade; they sometimes collaborated on stories that affected low-income minority communities. She covered Bailey’s funeral, and had no doubts about joining the team effort to try and continue his work and uncover the reason for his death. Burt graduated from San Francisco State University with a degree in journalism. Before joining the Tribune she worked as a writer for Bank of America corporate communications and the now-defunct Peninsula Times Tribune.
