Antar Bey, 23, was CEO of Your Black Muslim Bakery for only a year when he was killed in an apparent carjacking in October 2005.

The 2003 death of his father, patriarch Yusuf ALI Bey, ushered in a violent period of succession for the bakery’s leadership. Police believe the struggle pitted the older leadership, closely connected to the senior Bey, against the Bey children, then coming of age and feeling the leadership was their birthright.

Antar Bey, the older brother of Yusuf Bey IV, had assumed control of the bakery in February 2004, shortly after the disappearance of their father’s anointed successor, Waajid Aljawwaad Bey, 51. He was later found in a shallow grave in the Oakland Hills. Bakery security head John Bey, a spiritual son of the senior Bey and part of the older generation, was shot several times in Oakland’s well-to-do Montclair district but survived.

Alfonza Phillips was convicted of murdering Antar Bey after his girlfriend and a police informant both testified that Phillips had confessed to the killing. He is serving a life sentence without possibility of parole. Prosecutors contended Phillips planned to rob Bey of the $5,000 rims on his BMW 745i. Phillips’s attorney contended that Bey’s death could have resulted from the family’s feud.

Yusuf Bey IV succeeded his brother as CEO.
